The Faculty of Humanities at Leiden University invites applications for a professorship or a senior lecturership in Modern Chinese Economy, to strengthen the University’s contributions to the study of modern Asia and to Area Studies. Duties include program leadership and teaching in the MSc in Chinese Economy and Business, jointly offered by Leiden University and the Rotterdam School of Management RSM / Erasmus UniversityEUR. The Faculty of Humanities is comprised of the Institutes of Area Studies, Creative & Performing Arts, Cultural Disciplines, History, Linguistics, Philosophy and Religious Studies. With a staff of more than 700, it serves well over 4000 students. Drawing on expertise in languages from all over the world, it stands out by the synergy of a wide range of approaches to knowledge. This is visible in a truly international orientation and a strong record in teaching and research, with in-depth cultural and historical perspectives emphatically linked to engagement with modern society, as part of the multi-disciplinary study of human endeavor past and present.
As part of the Leiden Institute for Area Studies, Chinese Studies and (East) Asian Studies at Leiden University are committed to the integration of disciplinary and regional-historical perspectives, on a solid foundation of excellent language skills and supported by specialized libraries. Current staff in East Asian Studies have expertise in the fields of Anthropology, Art and Material Culture, History (political, social, intellectual, cultural), International Relations, Law, Language Pedagogy, Linguistics, Literature and Film, Media Studies, Philosophy, Political Science, Religion and Sociology. The new position will strengthen the multi-disciplinary modern China and (East) Asia programs, in light of the global significance of Chinese economic development and concomitant student demand, and enable synergy with expertise in the fields of (Chinese) business and management at RSM / EUR.
The successful candidate will integrate disciplinary and (comparative) regional-historical perspectives, in order to offer insight into the national economy of China and its historical development in terms of ideas and institutions, and put China’s economic development into regional and global perspectives. Open to interdisciplinary cooperation, s/he will undertake original research involving primary sources and fieldwork as a member of the Leiden Institute for Area Studies LIAS and the Modern East Asia Research Center MEARC; teach at undergraduate and postgraduate levels, in lecture and seminar formats, primarily in Chinese Studies and East Asian Studies programs and the MSc in Chinese Economy and Business, for a total of approximately 6 contact hours per week; initiate, stimulate and supervise postgraduate research; and contribute to administration on various institutional levels. The position has a substantial budget for the acquisition of research material, the development of the field within an East Asian Studies context (through MEARC), and the organization of conferences and so on.
Preference will be given to candidates with strong professional networks in China and/or the ability to teach and do research in larger, (East) Asian Studies contexts. Candidates must have outstanding research qualities manifest in a high-quality, internationally accessible research and publication record, preferably including the acquisition of project funding; fieldwork experience; outstanding educational talents and teaching experience; management and administrative skills; and an excellent command of Mandarin and English. (If the successful candidate is not Dutch-speaking, resources will be made available for her/him to acquire a working command of Dutch within two years from taking up duty.)
