As of January it is easier to receive the Blue
Card EU. Chancellor Merkel’s cabinet decided
that degree-level workers from outside the
EU are allowed to work in Germany with a
minimum annual salary of 44,000 Euro. After
two years of working, the qualified non-EU
workers can apply for permanent residence.
The requirement that German companies first
look for candidates within other EU countries
before choosing third-country nationals is
dropped. Annual salaries higher than 48,000
Euro give the right for permanent residence
at once.
A lower income limit of 33,000 Euro will be
applicable for jobs with a significant lack of
adequate staff (this applies to all kinds of
engineers, academic and related experts of
the information and communication branches
and doctors).
The government’s decision still requires approval
from the Upper House of Parliament
(Bundesrat).
