I've decided to quit cold turkey. I dont think it's going to help with the problem. I have enough on my hands now without becoming an alcoholic.

Ive recently upgraded my Linux distribution, and Chinese input has mysteriously stopped working, so excuse the English.

I dont think it's as easy and straightforward as people think it is. I couldnt even fully grasp the difficulties of a PHD until I am a couple of months into it.

As I mentioned earlier in my previous deleted thread, this is a very prestige school, and everyone who can get in is good and very good. I mean the school is ranked amongst the top 4 best computer science schools in the world. It is really competitive, it is not just technically challenging, but it is also mentally challenging. The expectations from your adviser is very high. It's kind of hard for me to just hide my head in the sand and pretend that nothing is happening. If you are not good enough, you get kicked out of the program. American schools also have a very different work ethic than German schools. In German schools, you are not really expected to work on the weekends, whereas here you are sort of expected to do that.

As I replied in another post, I've decided to quit drinking cold turkey. I have enough problems on my hands without having to worry about becoming an alcoholic.

Just out of curiosity, did you do a PhD in Computer Science? If so, in what area of Computer Science?

I have expected the PhD program to be challenging, but I really didn't think that I was going to get depressed so early on into my PhD. I worked on something entirely different in my Master ( also CS, but a completely different field), and then I am here, with no knowledge or whatsoever of this field. I am throwing in at the deep end, and somehow have to make my way through.

I guess there is no other way around it, except hard work. I just have to try and try and try and try... and eventually, I will somehow overcome this and learn to thrive at graduate school.

原来不是在德国,那正常,德国研究生以上的大学压力可远比不了美国

I am doing database management, in direction of ecological and biodiversity data. Sort of computer science too but also involves a big part of natural science. However it is a postdoc position (without a phd though) so I have rather relaxed time here. But the phd students around me feel similar ways like you and they work 24/7.

I think for CS a phd is not a must since you can easily find any good job in industry field. If you insist to go down the research road, it must mean that you love your specific field so much that working with it is pure fun for you. Otherwise it is just not worth it. If you can handle the pressure, then congratulations for an almost guaranteed bright future. But even if you cannot, it is not the end of the world. So take it easy.
