False Friends

1. Eventuell:possible, possibly, fashionable
Eventual:   schließlich, dass es am Ende...

Example:
a.Are there any possible side-effects with this drug?(eventuell)
Could you possibly meet me at the airport tonight?(eventuell)

b.The fire in the office block was eventually brought under control.
    The Labour Party accepts the goal of an eventual monetary union of Europe.



2. aktuell: present, current, up-to-date, fashionable
actual: überhaupt, wirklich, eigentlich, tatsächlich

example:
a.At the moment environment pollution is a topical subject.(aktuelles Thema)
The current political situation should be a warning to all shareholders. ( aktuelle Situation)
Light colors are fashionable again. (aktuell)

b.The actual circumstances of the murder were quite different.
My husband left me, I actually don’t know what to do.
It has been maintained that the so-called homeless are actually tramps who do not want a home. (eigentlich)


3. konsequent: sticking to the same frame of reference rules, consistent, unremitting,
consequent: infolgedessen, eine Folge, daraus resultierend

Example:
a.        Most of my colleagues in the party are consistent supporters of the government’s economic policy.(konsequent)
Because of her ability and unremitting training won Steffi Graf the Grand Slam in 1988. (konsequent)
Judges must be firm, fair and consistent in their application of the law.(konsequent)
b.        The dismissal of the Chancellor of the Exchequer was consequent on the recent scandal.(eine Folge)
My friend had a serious accident on the motorway and consequently had to spend a fortnight in hospital.(infolgedessen)



4. Chef: boss
chef: Küchenchef

Example:
a.        I can’t simply stay away from work for a few hours. My boss would sack me at once. (Chef)
b.        I’m sorry, our chef is busy preparing the meal with the other cooks.(Küchenchef)



5. Rezept: recipe, prescription, remedy
receipt: Quitung, Kassenbon
   
Example
a.Your cake is so tasty. Could you give me your recipe?   (Rezept)
    I can give you the medicine only on prescription.      (Rezept)
    I have a good remedy for pushy commercial travellers: I do not open the door. (Rezept)
b.Could you issue a receipt for this sum, please? I need it for the tax return.   (Quittung)


6. sensible: sensitive
sensible: vernünftig

Example:
a.Maud is a sensitive person so leave her alone, please.      (sensibel)
   You’ve touched on a sensitive area of foreign policzy with your remark.    (sensibel)
b.In this unfortunate position the decision of our relatives to emigrate to New Zealand wassensible.          (vernünftig)


7. engagiert: committed, involved, active
    engaged: verlobt, angestellt, theatre: verpflichtet

Example:
a.He was a committed communist.         (engagiert)
   I’m surprised how involved you have become in politics.         (engagiert)
b.Fred and his wife were engaged for fifteen years before they got married.
   The bank has engaged a new director general in order to increase profits.
   She was engaged to play a major role in Shakespeare’s As You Like It.


8.    genial:ingenious, brilliant, inspired
       genial:freundlich

Example:
a.        A scanner is an ingenious device which enables us to feed pictures, photos or documents into a computer system.      (genial)
Then, quite unexpectedly, Dan came up with an inspired plan to get the money back.   (genial)
b.        The final talks between the delegates took place in a genial atmosphere.
the professor was a most genial man and our stay was a very pleasant one.

9. Fraktion: faction, group
    Fraction: Bruchteil

Example:
a.        Since the early 1970s, the Red Army Faction continues to carry on urban guerrilla warfare.(Franktion)
b.        For a fraction of a second he didn’t pay attention, so his opponent knocked him out.

10.   disinteressiert: uninterested, not interested
      disinterested: uneigennützig, neutral

Example:
a.        Some of our Hollywood producers are not uninterested in her return to the screen. (disinteressiert)
b.        As a disinterested ovserver, who do you think is right?
