Am 17. Februar 2008 hat der Kosovo seine Unabhängigkeit erklärt. Die Mitgliedsländer der EU haben sehr unterschiedliche Positionen zu der Frage, ob der neue Staat anerkannt werden soll. Welche Folgen hat der Schritt für die Region und Europa?
"Belgrade has suffered a series of painful defeats. The Yugoslavia built by Tito has collapsed. Montenegro, which hung on the longest, split from Serbia in 2006. And now Kosovo has taken the same step," writes Cyrill Stieger. But he sees "Serbia's chance for a new start with the loss of Kosovo - even if leading politicians and a large segment of the intellectual elite see things differently and feel they've been abused by the west yet again. Kosovo was always the foreign body in the Serbian state ? and a heavy burden. Now, Belgrade can finally free itself from this disastrous fixation on the so-called national question. It can shake loose once and for all this inheritance of Milosevic, and put all its energy into tackling economic and social problems. Stubborn resistance only leads to isolation."
"Belgrad hat eine Reihe schmerzlicher Niederlagen erlitten. Das von Tito geschaffene Jugoslawien ist zerfallen, Montenegro, das am längsten bei Serbien verblieb, hat sich im Jahre 2006 abgespalten, und nun hat auch Kosovo diesen Schritt getan", schreibt Cyrill Stieger und sieht dennoch im "Verlust Kosovos für Serbien eine Chance für einen Neubeginn, auch wenn die führenden Politiker und große Teile der geistigen Elite das anders sehen und sich einmal mehr vom Westen ungerecht behandelt fühlen. Kosovo war schon immer ein Fremdkörper im serbischen Staat ? und eine schwere Last. Belgrad könnte sich nun endlich von der verhängnisvollen Fixierung auf die nationale Frage lösen, mit dem Erbe Milosevics endgültig brechen und sich mit aller Kraft den wirtschaftlichen und sozialen Problemen zuwenden. Trotziger Widerstand führt nur in die Isolation."
