Abstract: Responding to the rise of China, the United States launched the Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP). In the U.S. discussion, there are two versions of the TPP, securitization of trade policy, and multilateralization of regionalism. In contrast, China has responded to both versions. It has not engaged in a dogfight style competition with the United States in the Asian Pacific region, but also aggressively shifted its attention to the Eurasian continent. Building the New Silk Route Economic Belt has become China's grand strategy in the 21st century. This will greatly shape the future order of international political economy and has profound implications to Europe in general and Germany in particular.

Descritiption Prof. Bai Gao:

After an education at Beijing University, Prof. Gao received his M.A. in 1990 and a Ph.D in Sociology in 1994 from Princeton University. Before entering the United States, he worked as a research fellow at Beijing University. He also worked as visiting scholar at the University of Tokyo, Hitotsubashi University, and the Yokohama National University. His major areas of research interest are economic sociology, political economy, comparative historical sociology, Japanese society, Chinese society, and East Asian capitalism.
