This debt we pay to human guile;
# n+ y) H0 p( K5 D) N% _ LWith torn and bleeding hearts we smile,/ d @* ?4 v3 \) A
And mouth with myriad subtleties., x8 j0 h" R/ q# A; c" o
6 F, t, f0 x# j2 S6 a) iWhy should the world be over-wise,
( e; @9 J1 ]0 R- p) sIn counting all our tears and sighs?/ o0 @) X1 l; G; [) A
Nay, let them only see us, while8 N* {3 l" ] f Y: @& d0 n1 s# d
We wear the mask.$ N) m& f$ i! J
5 l/ C) q8 [7 y$ e; W0 ]
We smile, but, O great Christ, our cries- h, t% q* c* m0 N) w& @
To thee from tortured souls arise.6 @6 T# F5 D5 h+ j1 O: v
We sing, but oh the clay is vile
3 z' k8 f, \- _( \Beneath our feet, and long the mile;
