It hides our cheeks and shades our eyes,—

$ y! Q+ W7 J% JWith torn and bleeding hearts we smile,
3 N5 p% Z, r2 t' x+ ]! qAnd mouth with myriad subtleties.

5 U7 Y# P0 X mWhy should the world be over-wise,
; y( \) C' m' `In counting all our tears and sighs?
' N) E3 o- S% E; k! c+ \! `Nay, let them only see us, while ~3 q/ C& E+ a" N1 m
We wear the mask.

We smile, but, O great Christ, our cries w, J2 b k, b# h4 w
To thee from tortured souls arise.0 \5 Q& R; Z4 Q; C5 [. b
We sing, but oh the clay is vile
