One day, when I was a freshman in high school,

I saw a kid from my class was walking home from school. 6 L' ^( h: u1 B! \( b3 g

His name was Kyle. $ X4 \) h6 b" D& Y# E$ b

O# M; E& I2 C9 A) bIt looked like he was carrying all of his books. $ E R* W4 b( Y/ k( F' w6 q

I thought to myself, "Why would anyone bring home all his books on a Friday?

He must really be a nerd." % m4 i) ^9 k @2 w0 [' q; j7 e

I had quite a weekend planned (parties and a football game with my friends tomorrow afternoon), so I shrugged my shoulders and went on.

As I was walking, I saw a bunch of kids running toward him. 6 w+ }) S3 J2 H' W* h

They ran at him, knocking all his books out of his arms and tripping him so he landed in the dirt.

+ S# q' \) n6 V/ t! Y! `His glasses went flying, and I saw them land in the grass about ten feet from him. 5 R a, `% g3 e, M+ a7 _

" V6 \* ]- b3 _5 m Q0 D( a4 UHe looked up and I saw this terrible sadness in his eyes ) d( P' M: P+ S

. K# d' A- O" D' _My heart went out to him. So, I jogged over to him and as he crawled around looking for his glasses, and I saw a tear in his eye. / r5 @: s2 w1 n
* e# q$ I0 c; I+ b7 g$ ?
5 ^2 Z% C4 a" e8 K( J+ I+ oAs I handed him his glasses, I said, "Those guys are jerks.
! ~6 f* I! b7 b5 V: {4 e

8 }3 W5 D( I: i* l& U: G" He looked at me and said, "Hey thanks!"

There was a big smile on his face.

- T/ `8 s2 Q( H9 V: wIt was one of those smiles that showed real gratitude.

J0 t" U7 {. }9 _# DI helped him pick up his books, and asked him where he lived
o* L; s, H0 ~5 [! V3 N3 d, @8 P7 R$ m. x$ `
% i2 M R; O% B) wAs it turned out, he lived near me, so I asked him why I had never seen him before. 8 @% P: X3 S( `$ C
! A1 p2 U$ C/ z+ \+ D
He said he had gone to private school before now. ! \+ O5 M: [2 `2 y7 K l9 E* [, ~
+ H' U- Z0 n3 p, H. i7 q
I would have never hung out with a private school kid before.

: O+ o% ]+ E7 y+ Z" |& jWe talked all the way home, and I carried some of his books.

: c: I; M) z" ]! h0 H- sHe turned out to be a pretty cool kid.

We hung out all weekend and the more I got to know Kyle, the more I liked him, and my friends thought the same of him.

& e: S) }2 A# a% U6 S; E2 {7 sMonday morning came, and there was Kyle with the huge stack of books again.

I stopped him and said, "Boy, you are gonna really build some serious muscles with this pile of books everyday!

"He just laughed and handed me half the books.

* A2 ^0 a8 `8 ?- ]Over the next four years, Kyle and I became best friends.

Kyle decided on Georgetown, and I

I knew that we would always be friends, that the miles would never be a problem. 4 V4 U A6 l; _

i( f0 m6 p! {0 O' B I" I/ q. EHe was going to be a doctor, and I was going for business on a football scholarship. # F0 J5 h% F2 u& p$ S

I was so glad it wasn't me having to get up there and speak

Boy, sometimes I was jealous.

Today was one of those days.

So, I smacked him on the back and said, "Hey, big guy, you'll be great!" - h# F; i3 A1 r) K# E

He looked at me with one of those looks (the really grateful one) and smiled.

As he started his speech, he cleared his throat, and began 1 k7 E: `: P: g6 V

"Graduation is a time to thank those who helped you make it through those tough years. ( L( W& ~2 @/ y8 i# r
2 F1 L: D- ?$ k/ q& N0 K, C/ QYour parents, your teachers, your siblings, maybe a coach...but mostly your friends...

I am here to tell all of you that being a friend to someone is the best gift you can give them.

He had planned to kill himself over the weekend.

+ J( n. ?5 K& C2 N2 f! U0 nHe talked of how he had cleaned out his locker so his Mom wouldn't have to do it later and was carrying his stuff home.

8 V; W2 G \/ B7 cHe looked hard at me and gave me a little smile. 3 g4 P$ F3 G: }: v3 \% H
6 n' S! J3 u$ `8 Y; K; h1 f) W"Thankfully, I was saved.

My friend saved me from doing the unspeakable."

5 D8 L/ a* `" j" F EI heard the gasp go through the crowd as this handsome, popular boy told us all about his weakest moment.

I saw his Mom and dad looking at me and smiling that same grateful smile.

& \. m6 p h; p8 S1 @Not until that moment did I realize its depth.

1 G* w5 B7 N$ l6 JNever underestimate the power of your actions.

4 k/ T4 m2 `# _3 t% z' G3 b4 GWith one small gesture you can change a person's life.
